New Villarreal midfielder Matias Fernandez produced some of the magic he was known for at Colo Colo as the Yellow Submarine downed Real Madrid 1-0.
Diego Forlan had started the match-winning play in the midfield by picking out Fernandez.
Fernandez, last year's South American Player of the Year, shrugged off Madrid's Diarra and put a no-look pass through to Marcos Garcia that froze World Player of the Year Fabio Cannavaro.
Sergio Ramos gave chase while Cannavaro was left to watch as Garcia slotted passed a helpless Iker Casillas.
Real Madrid fall one point off the pace as Barcelona and Sevilla have a game in hand.
Villarreal are now just seven points from a Champions League spot.
Fernandez joined Villarreal from Copa Sudamericana runners-up Colo Colo in late December and debuted against Valencia earlier this month.
