Italy and Real Madrid defender Fabio Cannavaro has been named FIFA's World Player of the Year.

The award is decided by national team coaches and captains.

The other two finalists were Zinedine Zidane, who has won the award three times, and last year's winner Ronaldinho.

World Cup winner Cannavaro was named European Footballer of the Year last month.
